Japanese Soaking Tubs

What is a Japanese soaking tub?

A Japanese soaking tub — traditionally an ofuro — is a deep bath designed for sitting upright and immersing your whole body to the shoulders, rather than reclining. It prioritises depth over length, delivering a full, hot soak in a footprint far smaller than a standard Western bath.

For centuries the ofuro has been less about washing than ritual — you wash and rinse first, then step into clean, hot water purely to soak. Because the water stays clean, a household traditionally shares it. The design follows the ritual: deep, compact, and built to hold heat.

How deep is a Japanese soaking tub?

Deep enough to cover your shoulders while seated — typically 600mm and up. Omnitub's seated soakers reach 1000mm of internal depth, with soaking depths across the range from 600mm to 1200mm. A standard UK bath gives you roughly 300–400mm — barely past the waist.

Japanese soaking tub vs a standard bath

Japanese soaking tub (Omnitub) Standard UK bath
Soaking depth 600–1000mm+ ~300–400mm
Position Upright, shoulder-deep Reclined, half-submerged
Footprint Compact — fits small bathrooms Long — needs a full wall
Heat retention High — deep water + Omnigel build Lower — shallow, thin shell
Finish Made to order in your colour (BS 4800 / RAL / paint-match) Standard sizes only

How do you use a Japanese soaking tub?

Wash and rinse fully outside the tub first — in your shower or with a hand-held — then step in to soak in clean, hot water. Because you're not washing in it, the water stays clean, so you can keep it hot and soak as long as you like.

How much water does a soaking tub use?

Sitting upright, the tub fills around your body rather than along its length — less floor space for the same depth of water. Capacity depends on size; every Omnitub product page lists its exact litres, and you can check whether a tub fits your space before you order.
